Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Benefits of a Doula?

The benefits of doula services are as follows, but the most important benefit is that she can help you feel empowered during your labour and birth. A doula would be responsible for things such as educating you on labour and birth, a birth map, giving you psychological support, monitoring your contractions and sleep patterns, supporting breastfeeding mothers, providing pain relief techniques, preparing the room for childbirth, and negotiating medications with doctors or midwives before the birthing day arrives. Having a doula will help you to have a positive experience of childbirth and reduce some of the stress that comes with it.

Doulas also play an important role in advocating for women's health during their pregnancy as they are trained to view every aspect of pregnancy from a woman's perspective.

What if I Have a Caesarean?

I can still support you as your doula.

A planned caesarean is a common request from women who know they want to have their baby that way and from women who are having complications during labour. There are many reasons why a woman might choose to have a planned caesarean, but one of the main reasons is that it's easier for both the mum and baby.

If you've made the decision to have your baby in this way, I will help you settle into the hospital, inform you of any necessary processes, and help calm any of the nerves you may be experiencing. Depending on the anaesthetist, surgeon, and hospital, I may be allowed to join you in the theatre. In the case that i'm barred entry, I will wait outside and help comfort you and doula my job as normal.

A planned caesarean will mean that I may not be present with you during labour and birth as I would normally be.

Will the Doula Assist my Partner?

Doulas help the partner in ways such as:

-pack and deliver the hospital bag to the parents, giving them an extra set of hands while they pack

-assist in installing car seats and other safety equipment, if needed

-help make plans for childcare

-offering emotional support to the father through labour and delivery

There are many things a doula can do. The doula will come with your partner during pregnancy and remain with them during labour. This is great because it relieves some of the stress from momma's partner. The doula should be able to answer any questions your partner may have about different stages of labour, childbirth positions or anything else that may be on his mind.

How Much Does A Doula cost?

Generally we can't give exact prices for our services until we know exactly what it is that you need from us. Getting a quote is as easy as leaving your details in the box just below and we'll get back to you with a price within a day or two.

Are Homebirths Safe?

According to homebirthaustralia.org, "in a study of over 5000 births in the USA and Canada, Women who intended at the start of labour to have a home birth with a certified professional midwife had a low rate of intrapartum and neonatal mortality," It's generally not recommended if you're giving birth to multiples, your baby isnt positioned for headfirst delivery, or if you've had a casesarean in the past. There is always the option to be transported during labour to a hospital, but you should plan for that as a backup.

If you are considering a homebirth we would highly recommend taking some antenatal classes melbourne to make sure you're completely prepared for the nuances of childbirth. A birth map is also recommended and is something our doulas can take you through when they visit. Home birth Melbourne is generally considered safe so long as you are fully prepared.
